It is important to get annual pelvic exams and pap smears so that abnormalities indicative of infection, disease, or cervical cancer are caught early. Typically between the ages of 13 and 15 a young woman should come in for her first visit where we discuss the changes to the body, what to expect during puberty and periods. Then, by the time a young woman is 21 years of age we usually see her to do her first pap smear and talk about sexually transmitted disease prevention. From there, between 21 and 50, continual follow ups will be scheduled to perform screening tests and any family planning concerns.
At the Women’s Clinic of Houston we offer comprehensive women’s care. Patients who become pregnant continue to see us as we care and hep them and their baby through the life changing journey. Around age 50, we will start suggesting mammograms, pelvic exams, blood tests for diabetes, cholesterol and thyroid, and colon cancer screening, as needed. We will also address the issues of menopause, sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence as they come up. Contact our office to schedule your annual Gynecological Exam today.
