Annual pelvic exams and Pap tests are important for you to prevent diseases and monitor your gynecologic health. During your exam you will be screened for infection, inflammation or abnormal cells that may indicate disease. Early detection is important to prevent cervical cancer.
Between the ages of 13 to 15 at your first visit we will discuss your periods and what to expect during your puberty and the changes of your body. By the age of 21 you will have your first pap smear and we will discuss your periods and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. After 21 and up to the age of 50 we will continue follow up on screening tests and family planning methods. If pregnancy occurs, the Women’s Clinic of Houston will take great care of you and your baby. By age 50 the recommendations are: mammogram, pelvic exam, colon cancer screening, blood tests for screening of diabetes, cholesterol and thyroid. Menopause, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction are also common problems at this age.
An annual exam is one of the most important steps you can take in preventing the most common women’s diseases.
